Ask Big Malc

Big Malc Campbell and Richard (The Knowledge) Allan… Salamander Pumps is fielding its A Team for the Renewables Roadshow powered by Plumb Center. This blog brings

Between them, there’s nothing they don’t know about shower pumps, water pressures, whole house pumps, you name it, they can tell all you need to know about it!  Don’t get them going: the hind legs off a donkey are nothing to these lads…. On the other hand, if you’ve got a problem, or a question about pumps et al, there’s nobody better qualified to help you out.

If you’re in the trade – if you’re not, you must have taken a wrong turn to get here, that’s for sure – and if you’re based within call-out distance of one of the Renewables Roadshow venues, try to get along and say hello. Pick their brains why don’t you? It’s free, for goodness’ sake.

Can’t make it? No bother. The Lads will answer any questions you submit right here. If it’s about a pump problem, we’ll publish it. If it’s about anything else – say, you’re not sure what to buy your mother in law for her 65th, we’ll publish that, too. In fact, we’ll include anything you contribute so long as it makes us laugh. Just keep it decent, will you?

We hope you enjoy our light-hearted approach. Have your say, tell us what you think! And remember, every month, one lucky contributor of a question for the lads will win a £30 discount off their next Salamander Pump purchase. Which can’t be bad, can it?

Let’s keep in touch!

Do you have a question for Big Malc or TK? Or maybe a plumbing gag we can use in forthcoming editions of Ask Big Malc?
Post them here and we’ll get right back to you.
    Thanks!

  2. Hi my salamder dual pump is about 5 years old…been working fine until last week…the green light is on but when the pump kicks in its stops after a short while..what could the problem be? thanks

Hi Paul. When the pump stops working do you see a red fault light? There are 3 on top of the pump and depending on which one is lit will indicate where the fault may lie- eg LED3 Red lit would indicate the temperature going through the pump is too hot and the pump will shut off to protect itself.

Do you have the serial number of the pump at hand?

    Hi,

My pump started leaking water last week. It is a RSP 100 3.0 Bar. It was servicing the whole house showers, taps, toilets etc.. From your pumpwise chart it suggests that this pump type is not suitable for this application. My pump is 4 years old. My query is if the fault is minor and this pump can be fixed is it o.k to reinstall it.? What are the potential pitfalls for doing this.

    Thanks

    Noel

Noel, sorry about that, but can I help it if he comes home form work and falls asleep in front of the telly? He’s done a blog in your honour, so please take a look at it

    Hi,

I have a Salamander BSM Twin shower pump which was fitted in December 1995.
On discovering a leak I have checked the pump and found water is leaking from the plastic housing where
the drive shaft enters from the motor on the hot side. The hot water supply to the uinit has a temperature control valve fitted.

Is it possible to get a replacement seal kit to replace the damaged seals

The information on pump is as follows:

    MRD242DAA3610D/R
    W 550 RPM 2800
    V 220/240 HZ50
    FLA 1.7 PH1
    INS CL.F AMB 40C MAX
    ENCL IP22 RTG STR 30MIN
    CAP 10MFD 440VBSM TWIN
    BS5000/11 24129:4:93. P.W.
    MHO43545 L90

This was a reconditioned unit supplied by Salamander to replace a defective Salamander pump.

If so would it be sensible to replace both seals in the unit as it is quite old.

I was also wondering if you had fitting instructions or diagrams as to how to replace this seal.

Can you please let me know how to progress my enquiry.
    regards,

    Sam
